There are a number of turn of the century historic homes here in the affordable downtown neighbourhood of Central in North Bay, but over the years the area has seen an influx of newer homes built.
One of the most attractive features of Central is the beautiful mile long waterfront park with bike path and walking trails adjacent to picturesque Lake Nipissing, developed in the 1980s. Each summer, this area welcomes thousands of residents and tourists to a Summer in the Park festival, featuring entertainers, live music, exciting exhibits, vendors and a midway.
Sports and recreation is a tradition in North Bay; the Chief Commanda is an all aluminum vessel providing tourists and residents scenic cruises on Lake Nipissing. North Bay Marina, Goodlife Fitness, and newly renovated Memorial Gardens Arena, home rink for the OHL North Bay Battalions are conveniently located in Central.
Downtown North Bay offers many amenities including family run local businesses, medical offices, restaurants, North Bay Farmer’s Market, North Bay Public Library, bus transportation and lively nightlife establishments. Schools include Alliance Public School, Chippewa Secondary School, as well as Dr. McDougall, King George, St. Joseph, Mother St-Bride, St. Alexander, and St. Hubert schools .
The Discovery North Bay Museum spotlights history from the late 1800s to the 1960s. The location itself is historic as the museum is housed in a CPR train station on the west perimeter of the downtown core, which was originally built in 1903 and restored for Discovery North Bay in 2004.
