Rich history
The Town of Newmarket was settled by Quakers at the turn of the 19th Century. By the mid-1800s, Newmarket became locally recognized as a busy centre for small industry and trading. The name Newmarket actually came to be as a result of its early commercial activity. While York (present day Toronto) was the ‘old market,’ this new centre of commerce became the ‘new market.’
